The style of roof depends on personal taste, location, the environment and the structure. If snowload is high it makes sense to use a steep roof, if water collection is part of the plan then different materials will be needed, and a large roof are will need a string structure to keep it up. One common characteristic, however, is big overhangs. The less weather touches the walls, the better. Make it a minimum of 16 inches.
The walls ideally should be brick, but concrete panels or a timber frame home are fine. But they need to be insulated to keep the workshop warm/cool and to reduce noise transmission. The inner skin should be plywood, so you can easily put up and take down any fixings you want. Matt white paint is the best finish, to improve the lighting.
A kit home allows people to create a home that fit around them and their families. A self build project has three main cost elements and they are firstly design, then materials and lastly labour. A kit house scores when on all three of these elements. Typically a kit house costs around 80 per square foot compared to 150 per square foot for a highly bespoke one.
If you're building in a remote area with little manpower remember: getting a 10" thick 15 foot log can be pretty tough. Ropes, planks, pulleys and extra hands can help you accomplish it, but if you've only got one or two people imagine how much easier it is to build the same 15' long wall with 16" pieces.
Saber by Antonio's, inside La Fonda on the Taos plaza, open till 9 pm; order up the spicy posole, poblano cream chowder, or the mashed potato flautas. Make sure to save room for tres leches cake.
If sheet paneling is a little daunting, there are real-wood options appropriate for a wood ceiling at any lumber yard. Look for tongue-and-groove edges that are beveled to form a V-groove. This paneling is installed board by board with adhesive and blind nailing.
The first problem with timber frame homes that you should be aware of is this; most of the people who are making your kit are overcharging you for the service. Especially on the erection side. Why should you pay more for a product that should cost you less? Perception? Perhaps. But more realistically they are squeezing that last few pennies from your already overused wallet.
Mark out where you want the door to be in the hallway and build a frame using the 90mm studs, as that is the thickness of your frame. Build it so you end up with an opening that is the size of your door plus the thickness of the jamb (the lowest point where the door will sit) plus 2mm on each side, 2mm on top and 10mm bottom for clearance so the door can open and close, plus 2-4mm extra as you can pack the door jamb out later on (this is your margin for error so be exact!). The bottom clearance can be altered if need be.
What other benefits do you get from this form of gardening? Let's see... there's the removal of soil problems, greatly improved pest and weed control, the above mentioned ease of access and the increase in your crop harvest.
